Ireland
is perhaps better known for the art of the Tara brooch, high crosses,
Book of Kells and other superb and identifiably Irish examples.
The work of Jack Butler Yeats or Louis le Brocquy, too, may be familiar
to people casually aware of art in Ireland. To leave the subject
here, though, is to do it a grave injustice. To consider just the
twentieth century's contribution to the portfolio of Irish artistic
greats - further, reduce this to the century's painters: Paul Henry,
Evie Hone, Robert Ballagh, le Brocquy and Yeats as noted above,
Francis Bacon. The range of styles and the quality of the works
speak for themselves.
